From cell phone to silver screen

Hailed by Moviemaker Magazine as one of “The World’s Coolest Film Festivals”, The Disposable Film Festival is an annual juried international festival of short films made using casual video capture devices like cell phones, point and shoot cameras, webcams, and inexpensive handycams. Commencing in San Francisco, the program travels on to other film festivals worldwide over the course of the year.

Partnership

In 2015 we began working with Carlton Evans, executive director and co-founder of the festival, to create an identity that could seamlessly splice into the brand and be recycled for years to come. The mission had long been to conduct screenings, workshops, competitions, panels, parties, and other events, informing and exciting the next generation of filmmakers through the accessibility of alternative production.

Celebrating the films

Process

We wanted the identity to communicate the transient and resourceful nature at its core. Our solution customized a typographic system of letterforms and icons in various states of collapse, uniquely transforming all key messaging into a signature graphic element. Each character was printed, cut, shot, folded, shot, folded, shot, crumpled, shot, etc. You get the idea. The result was a distinctive library of expressive variety; some highly functional trash.

Outcome

Successive years saw the festival’s identity reinspired with each new event. Themes focused on emotional detachment from technology and creativity as a safe harbor in a sea of negativity. Good spirits, voices, and intentions were always lifted and celebrated. Throughout a decade of the festivals life, many minds gained with nothing wasted.
